Maia Campbell, ‘In the House’ star, busted in street-racing crackdown
Maia Campbell, the former bright, young star of the 1990s UPN comedy “In the House,” has been arrested.
The 43-year-old actress was busted for being a pedestrian in the roadway on May 16 during an Atlanta street-racing crackdown, according to police.
Although details regarding the bust are scarce, 44 people were arrested, reported The Atlanta Constitution-Journal.
Campbell, who was nominated for a Young Actors Award in 1996, became a breakout star playing opposite LL Cool J on the comedy series that ran for 76 episodes.
But after “In the House” was axed in 1998, Campbell’s acting career ground to a near-halt. Although she managed to snag guest film roles on Showtime’s “Seventeen Again" and 2005′s “Envy,” she has just one screen credit since 2010, according to IMDb.
Now, Campbell is better known for her publicized bouts with bipolar disorder and substance abuse.
After giving birth to a daughter, Elisha, in 2000, she stopped taking her meds the following year, according to the self-help series “Iyanla: Fix My Life.”
In 2017, Campbell made headlines when she was videotaped asking for crack while pumping gas in Georgia.
LL Cool J publicly offered his help to Campbell but was rebuffed.
“Hey Todd, look bro. I love you. I don’t need help,” said Campbell, referencing the rapper’s real name, James Todd Smith, in a video. “I just need a benefit concert for mental health. Don’t ‘TMZ’ me. This is really me.”
An Atlanta police spokesman claimed that illegal street racing is on the rise in the city amid the coronavirus pandemic, which is creating the “perfect storm” for bored teens and young adults who ordinarily would be hanging out at parks and malls but can’t due to social-distancing regulations.
