The Last Dance

“The Last Dance” documentary event tonight 9:00 PM

“The Last Dance,” which chronicles Michael Jordan and the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls, premieres today at 9 pm ET with Episodes 1 and 2. The documentary about the 1997-98 Bulls was initially scheduled to air during the 2020 NBA Finals in June. But, ESPN decided to move things up with sports seasons on hold due to the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

With all the key figures, including star Michael Jordan and coach Phil Jackson, set to be free agents in 1997, the team entered the campaign knowing they wouldn’t have another season together. So Jackson dubbed the season “The Last Dance.” The Bulls eventually beat the Utah Jazz in the 1998 NBA Finals for their sixth title in eight seasons, capping off one of the greatest dynasties in league history.

Jordan scored just 14 points in Jan 1998. Still, the eventual champion Bulls were too much for the Warriors. Chicago outlasted Golden State 87-80, as Scottie Pippen led all scorers with 22 points. All in all, Warriors went just 9-17 against Jordan, three of those wins came downside of his career when he was with the Wizards in Oakland, and 10 of those came off made free throws. He shot only 2 of 17 from the field, which was the worst in his career at the time and lasted until he made only one of his nine shot attempts in 2002 when his Washington Wizards lost to the Toronto Raptors.

Still, the eventual champion Bulls were too much for the Warriors. Those Bulls teams were revered, but as we’ve seen in clips released by ESPN, it wasn’t smooth sailing. In an interview with The Athletic, director Jason Hehir recounted a conversation with Jordan in which the Hall of Famer said he didn’t want to do the documentary because viewers would see him as a “horrible guy.”Alas, the film will be released Sunday, and we can judge Jordan for ourselves. Watch the documentary on ESPN TV at 9 pm ET.
